Tomi Kauppinen,
PhD, Postdoctoral researcher
Abstract
Dr Tomi Kauppinen is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Media Technology at the Aalto University School of Science in Finland. During 2010-2012 he was a postdoctoral researcher in Germany in the Semantic Interoperability Lab (MUSIL) at the Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Muenster in Germany. He holds a PhD (2010) from the Aalto University with a thesis on reasoning about change and time, and interacting with the reasoning results. He co-chaired the First and Second International Workshops on Linked Science 2011 and 2012 at the International Semantic Web Conferences, the track on Interoperability and Semantics of the Geoinformatik 2011 conference, and led the breakout session for Vocabularies for Science at Science Online London 2011 organized by Nature. He was also an organizer of the Workshop on GIScience in the Big Data Age 2012 (GIBDA2012). His research focuses on information usability--especially the visualization, linkage and interaction aspects. Results are for example novel methods for spatiotemporal and semantic modeling of processes such as changes, and the use of gestural movements to interact with the results. The aim is to facilitate interaction with information by providing better retrieval results, and outstanding illustrations and visualizations of complex linkages. This supports using and understanding of large spatiotemporal information. His current projects are opening and linking of scientific and educational data in in the the LinkedScience.org- project and in Linked Open Aalto- project, and sharing of information about changes in ObservedChange.com-project.

Research Interests
- My main research questions are:
- Data Science and Data Visualization for Big Data: How to analyze, abstract, represent, visualize, and use networked data (like Linked Data) in revolutionary ways? (see example work)
- What are basic (and optimal) interaction and exploration patterns in the case of big geospatial data? Which gestures are natural for interacting with maps? (see example work)
- How can we analyze, reason about, understand and formally represent complex spatiotemporal systems? (see example work)
- What kind of formal linkage can we discover and establish between very different kinds of phenomena and how? (see example work)
- What are the important representation and visualization mechanisms for processes, events and operations of spatiotemporal systems? (see example work)
- How can we change the way science is done to achieve Linked Science? For example, how can we open up all the data and methods to support science to be more transparent, reproducible and transdisciplinary? How to support openness and transparency of a university? (see example work)
- These research questions I am tackling with the following toolbox:
-
Data Science,
Information Systems,
Linked Open Data technologies,
Information Visualization,
ontologies,
spatio-temporal reasoning and spatio-temporal ontologies concerned with modeling space,
time,
or processes (environmental, socio-economic),
geographic information science,
operations research,
data mining,
crowdsourcing,
Linked Science,
fuzzy sets, statistical computing, and
different systems of logic.
